AI-Integrated Assignment Redesign Process
-
Define Learning Objectives
- Start by listing the desired skills or knowledge students will gain from doing the assignment. We recommend using the Transparent Assignment Design Template by Mary-Ann Winkelmes (available for download at the bottom of this page) to guide this process. Consider how, if at all, AI use could enhance those goals, or if its use would deprive students of an important task for their learning.
-
Identify Relevant AI Tools
- Select which AI tool you'll ask students to use for the assignment based on the task. Will you need one that specializes in generating images, performing data analysis, or text generation? Browse lists of tools, such as this one from the Massachusetts Library System, to get started.
-
Revise the Prompt to Incorporate AI
- Include a rationale for using AI, linking it to the assignment’s learning goals and benefits.
- Provide an alternative option for students who prefer not to use AI, or invite them to discuss alternatives with you.
- Include cautionary notes about AI tools, such as their potential for errors or bias, and emphasize the importance of critically reviewing AI outputs.
-
Try It Out!
- Act as a student and complete the assignment using the AI tool to identify any issues or areas for improvement. Use this insight to make necessary modifications.
