Recommendations for Incorporating AI in Assignments

Updated on

  • Clarify AI's role and usage. Provide clear guidelines on which tools can be used and on what tasks AI is allowed and beneficial, as well as areas where students' original work is required (such as in the evaluation and reflection on the quality of content from the AI tool). Consider specifically prompting students to identify limitations and potential biases of the tools they use.

  • Have students submit their conversation with the chatbot or label their AI-assisted content. When incorporating AI tools into assignments, you may want to require that students submit their chatbot prompts and the AI's replies. This allows you to evaluate the students' engagement with the AI tool and makes it easier to identify where AI played a role in shaping their work. Alternatively, you can provide students with label statements they can use to tag their AI-generated content, such as the ones on this template by Marc Watkins at the University of Mississippi.

  • Design an alternative assignment for students who prefer not to use an AI chatbot. For example, they could document a conversation with a classmate, family member, or friend as an alternative to AI interaction.

  • Include an evaluation and reflection component of the assignment. One of the benefits of AI-integrated assignments is the opportunity they provide for students to engage in critical reflection on content. Importantly, learning is deepened not just through the experience of completing the assignment but through evaluation and reflection on the process. By reflecting on AI's outputs and its relation to their learning, students are encouraged to adopt a critical and metacognitive approach to their learning.

  • Protect student privacy. Remind students that they do not need to use their personal email accounts to log into AI chatbots. Some AI tools, like ChatGPT, offer the option to use them without logging in, which can help address data privacy concerns. Alternatively, students may choose to create a separate email account specifically for use with AI chatbots. However, it is not guaranteed that the content they submit won't be retained, as some AI company's privacy policies are vague.
