AI-Integrated Biology and Science Communication Example

Before AI Integration  

Instructions: In a biology course that has a learning objective related to scientific communication, the instructor assigns the following task: 

Prepare a slideshow or script to communicate the biological processes of aging to a layperson. 

After AI Integration

  1. Prepare a script to explain the biological processes of aging to a layperson.
  2. Use an AI Chatbot to simulate interactions with a layperson, engaging in three rounds of Q&A with the AI Chatbot.
    1. For each round, present a portion of your explanation and allow the AI Chatbot to ask questions.
    2. Respond to the bot's questions to provide additional clarification.
    3. Please also include screenshots of your interactions with the Chatbot when you submit your work.
  3. Based on these interactions, refine your original script. Include a reflective portion that discusses what realizations you had chatting with the AI bot and how you think a real world interaction would differ and why. 

Why Use AI in this Assignment?

The incorporation of AI in this assignment allows the student to get immediate, low-stakes feedback and respond to questions, making it good preparation for real-world interactions. This assignment could be one step in a larger assignment that prepares students before a higher-stakes presentation. By reflecting on how their interactions with the Chatbot differ from those of a real person, students are prompted to consider the limitations of the AI tools, such as their inability to account for emotions.
