Contextual Influences on AI Coursework Approaches

Updated on

When deciding your position on AI use in coursework, we encourage you to take a student-centered approach that goes beyond your own personal feelings on AI. Consider the diverse needs of your students and the specific goals of the course.

Keep in mind that your position on the use of AI in coursework can exist along a spectrum from full prohibition to instructional integration. Many instructors have a nuanced view that acknowledges the benefits and appropriate uses of AI, while also recognizing the potential threat it poses to student learning and skill development. Where do you place yourself on the spectrum?

Factors to Consider

  • Teaching and Learning Context: How do factors like class size and modality influence the appropriateness and feasibility of prohibiting, limiting, or integrating AI?
  • Expectations of External Groups: Are there accreditation standards or departmental guidelines that encourage or discourage the use of AI in your course? How might professional benchmarks or industry standards shape your approach to incorporating or restricting AI in assignments?
  • Subject Matter Characteristics: How does the complexity of the subject matter influence the ways AI can support or hinder student learning? In what ways could students' varying levels of prior knowledge or skill affect how they interact with AI tools in your course?
  • Learner Characteristics: How might the diversity of your students’ backgrounds—such as age, experience, or linguistic differences—affect their ability to use AI effectively and responsibly? Could allowing uses of AI help mitigate differences in students' prerequisite knowledge or skills?
  • Instructor Characteristics: How confident are you in your own understanding of AI tools, and how does this affect your approach to integrating them into your teaching? How important is trusting your students to you, and how might this influence your approach to AI policies?
