Overview: Designing Effective Group Work

Updated on

Depending on your previous experiences, group work can seem like a blessing or a curse. When poorly designed, it can derail an otherwise effective assignment. But when designed effectively and presented clearly, group work increases student learning, fosters stronger relationships with peers, and results in higher course satisfaction. In this guide, we will provide a framework for designing and managing effective group work activities that can be used across modalities.

Considerations for Group Work

For group work to be successful, it’s best to have a well structured task with associated outcomes. We recommend that you answer the following questions before you design group work activities to ensure it's the right fit for your goals:

  1. What is your motivation for assigning group work? What is the purpose?

  2. Who should be involved in designing and delivering the group work? What resources do you need?

  3. How will you assess the group work and what do you want to evaluate?

  4. How will groups be formed?

  5. How much time is needed to complete the activity?

  6. Which technology will best support the group(s)?
