Asynchronous Teaching:

Enhancing Your Zoom Sessions with Canvas

Zoom lectures can be engaging and informative. But they are not the only way you can interact with students. Consider supplementing your Zoom lectures with the following Canvas features.

Discussions offer a robust platform for students to interact with faculty and fellow learners. With discussions you can pose a simple prompt, or you can invite students to share thoughts and opinions through text, audio, and video. Some other ways to use discussions:

  • To analyze case studies as a group
  • To share assignments and receive feedback
  • To pose questions to the instructor and receive answers
  • To reflect together on a Zoom lecture
  • To engage in conversation about readings and other course materials

You can also break students into smaller discussion groups so they might talk among themselves about an assignment or reading. For more information on how to set up a discussion, please see the following link:

Assignments can be submitted via Canvas. If you normally have students turn in physical papers or exams, have them now use Canvas to submit assignments. With Canvas assignments, you can also have students submit video and audio files, as well as engage in group work.

For more information on how to create and grade an assignment within Canvas, please see the following links:

Canvas has an easy-to-use, built-in quiz tool. This can be used for objective and subjective question types, with the former automatically graded by Canvas. You can find more information on how to create Canvas quizzes through the following link:

Please be aware that Canvas quizzes are not proctored, nor do we have an option for proctored exams.

Discussions, assignments, and quizzes can all be organized within Modules. Indeed, you can add these features directly from Modules. For more information on how to set up and work with Modules, please see this link:

Consider communicating with your students through announcements. With Canvas announcements you can share video, audio, and images. Canvas announcements are easier to use than email and allow for more interaction. For more information on how to make announcements, see the link below:
